Philly is the home of awesome music throughout the decades. Think of hits from Gamble & Huff’s Philadelphia International Records like Harold Melvin & The Blue Note’s “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” and The O’Jays classic “For the Love of Money“. And we can’t forget contemporary greats like Jill Scott and The Roots.
Philly is definitely a cool place. So much so that songs have been made about it. What are our Top 5 Philly Themed Songs? Let us know in the comments what you think. Better still, tell us what YOUR top 5 Philly themed songs are on Facebook and in the comments below!
Let’s start with #5…
Before you protest, hear us out as to why we included this song. The second verse begins with, “Innnn West Philadelphia, born and raised!” That one line is forever linked to Philadelphia even though it’s about Smith’s character’s life in Bel-Air. And let’s not forget, Philly is featured prominently in the show. But yeah, we can see if you have issues with this one.
But there’s no denying our #4 entry!
Bruce Springsteen is a rock legend. So when he was tagged to write “Streets of Philadelphia” for the Tom Hanks/Denzel Washington movie Philadelphia, you knew it was going to be a hit. Watch the video and step back in time to the streets of Philadelphia in the ‘90s. The mellow rhythm captures the flavor of Philly’s smooth groove.
The next entry is sure to be a hit…. Since it already was one for over 2 generations. Let’s check out #3…
In the 1970’s, The Sound of Philadelphia dominated the music scene in America. Sound of Philadelphia songs that have stood the test of time like The Spinners “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love”, “Betcha By Golly, Wow” by the Stylistics and the unforgettable “Lady Marmalade” by Labelle are examples of this.
But perhaps the most memorable Sound of Philadelphia song is TSOP – The Sound of Philadelphia better known as the “Soul Train Theme”. Every week for over 20 years, this song started “The Hippest Trip In America”. If you’re too young to know what we’re talking about, take a peek at the video to see what you missed!
Our #2 song had people singing about the “freedom” of Philadelphia for years….
For decades, this song was the unofficial theme song of Philadelphia. Sir Elton John’s funky piano solo and vocal hook had people coast to coast singing the praises of the City of Brotherly Love.
It seemed unlikely that anything could unseat this classic…. Until our #1 song hit the airwaves.
If you need to get the party started and nothing seems to be working, this song is guaranteed to get everyone on their feet! It doesn’t matter where you are in the country (and maybe even the world), everyone wants to be a Philadelphian because: “Motown Philly back again. Doing a little East Coast swing”.
Motown Philly sits King of the Hill for the best Philly themed song. It’s unlikely another will take its place anytime soon. So until then, Motown Philly will remain the unofficial anthem of Philadelphia.
