Philly’s Top Five

What Makes Philly, "Philly"

Brett Brown explains decision to not use Matisse Thybulle vs. Nuggets

2 min read

When the Denver Nuggets went on their run in the fourth quarter to rally from a 21-point deficit to stun the Philadelphia 76ers 100-97, one had to wonder why the team’s prized defensive rookie was not out on the floor.

Rookie Matisse Thybulle received his first DNP-CD on Friday after appearing in the first seven games of the season. When the Nuggets were going on their scoring rampage in the fourth, it would have been nice to have Thybulle out there to cause some havoc and force some turnovers.

Afterward, coach Brett Brown explained his decision that the other bench players were producing. Furkan Korkmaz had 12 points and he was drilling the three-pointer well and James Ennis III produced some good moments as well. Brown wanted to ride with those players and not burn out the rookie.

To Brown’s defense, those guys were playing well, but Thybulle’s defensive length and instincts would have been a big help to stopping Denver’s run. He averages two steals per game and it’s that type of production that can help close a game out. It really seemed as if Brown tried to do too much on Friday.
