Eastern State Penitentiary

eastern-state-penitentiaryTrivia question: Name a famous gangster who did time at Eastern State Penitentiary? If you said Al Capone, you’re right! If you said William Francis Sutton (a.k.a. “Slick Willie”), you’re right again!

If that got your juices flowing, you really need to visit this historic site. It was built by Quakers with the belief that criminals should do “penance”, hence it was the first “penitentiary”. It also was the home of solitary confinement. Prisoners we left in the cell with only an opening in the ceiling and a bible so they could “repent” of the bad ways.

Another little-known fact: Scenes from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, 12 Monkeys starring Brad Pitt & Bruce Willis along with portions of Tina Tuner’s video “One of the Living” for Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome were shot here.
